Colonel Harry Clive, a local landowner & Justice of the Peace, lived with Dorothy at Elds Gorse - the large white house to the west of the garden. Here, in 1940, he began work on the Quarry Garden, then a disused nineteenth century gravel quarry, to create a place where Dorothy, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, could take her daily exercise.
Sadly, in April 1942, Dorothy died but work on the garden continued unabated and in 1958, with the acquisition of more land the development of the Hillside Garden began. In the same year Harry set up the Willoughbridge Garden Trust to preserve the garden as a memorial to Dorothy and to provide a place for rest and recreation for the public.
Colonel Harry, the trust's first curator died in 1963, leaving a garden of beauty and interest throughout the seasons for everyone to enjoy.
