What's happening at Battlefield Farm?

We haveconverted the farm buildings to develop a Visitor Centre, Farm Shop and Café next to the site of the Battle of Shrewsbury.

The visitor centre tells the story of the Battle of Shrewsbury, the Farm Shop & Café provides an outlet for a range of delicious local produce which has 100% traceability, low food miles and great taste.

At Battlefield 1403 our aim is to create a happy, relaxed & popular visitor destination where everyone feels welcome.

The Battlefield Site

Shrewsbury Battlefield is located approximately three miles to the north of the centre of Shrewsbury. It is one of only forty-three battlefield sites in England and Wales which is included in the Register of Historic Battlefields (English Heritage) and as such is considered one of Britain's most important sites of conflict.

The battlefield was designated in 1995 and covers an area of approximately 100 hectares. The boundary of the battlefield has been determined in reference to a series of arbitrary boundaries and landmarks surrounding the recognised core area of the battle.

The northern edge of the battlefield is defined by a series of hedges running along the crest of the main ridge between the Albright Hussey and Battlefield Farm and follows the line of the parish boundary. While parts of this boundary are currently not defined, the 1888 Ordnance Survey map shows that it previously existed as a continuous boundary.

Battlefield Farm lies immediately to the north of the designated battlefield. The eastern limit of the battlefield is defined by the railway line and the western limit by a series of hedges, ditches and streams. The southern boundary of the designated site is more arbitrarily defined, following a stream then a field boundary and has been encroached upon by the recent construction of the A5124 road.

The Battle

The Battle of Shrewsbury was fought between King Henry IV and a rebellious faction led by the Percy family and marks one of the bloodiest conflicts to take place on British soil.

The significance of the battle lies not just in its political ramifications as precursor to the Wars of the Roses but also in the fact that it was the first time that the English longbow was used on both sides.
