Drayton Manor Park delight at baby Tapir just in time for Love Your Zoo Week

26th May 2017

BIAZA, the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ annual Love Your Zoo Week celebrations at Drayton Manor Park are all set to serve up a real treat for families from Saturday 27th May to Sunday 4th June.

Animals big or small, naughty and nice all reside at Drayton Manor Park Zoo’s tranquil space, a 15-acre haven set in the heart of Staffordshire. Rare and endangered species can thrive and breed safely, including newest additions Obie the baby Tapir, and Kit and Leo, twin Cotton-Top Tamarins.

Visitors to the Park and Zoo can enjoy a full timetable of Love Your Zoo themed activities including live animal talks and feeds, bug meets and sling shot feeds in the popular Spider Monkey enclosure all with the expert Zoo Keepers and Education Teams.

Families are invited to meet the Park’s Education Team at the Love Your Zoo Central stand, located by the Gibbon enclosure. The knowledgeable team will be sharing their passion for animal conservation and welfare and experiences of being part of BIAZA’s Love Your Zoo Week. Families are invited to listen carefully to the experts to be in with a chance of winning some cool prizes!

Chris Mitchell, Zoo Manager at Drayton Manor Park, said: “Every year we look forward to Love Your Zoo Week and our newest additions have only made us more excited!

“Conservation is at the heart of everything we do and so the animal keeping team couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Obie to our group of rare South American Tapirs. His birth is one of a number of rare and endangered animal breeding successes here at Drayton Manor Zoo this spring.

“The critically endangered Cotton-Top Tamarin is one of the smallest and rarest primates and we were therefore delighted when proud mum Ellie gave birth to twins, Kit and Leo recently. The cheeky monkeys originate from the South African Rainforest which is disappearing at a rate of 1.5 acres per second so conservation is key for these guys.”

“We are excited to hold so many EAZA breeding programme species and are hopeful of many more breeding successes as a result. We’ve just welcomed some tiny Turquoise Geckos to our family, this miniature species is currently endangered and professionals believe that within a few years, they could be extinct, unless critical conservation work continues. Here at Drayton Manor Zoo we are hopeful that these beautiful creatures will be part of a really important breeding success story, watch this space!”
