Time Travellers Bring Civil War
24th May 2011

The last time Kenilworth Castle saw active service as a fortified castle was in the English Civil War, and for three days over the half term holiday, young visitors to Kenilworth can enjoy a taste of what life might have been like for the castle under siege at English Heritage’s Time Travellers Go… Cavaliers and Roundheads!
From Tuesday 31 May to Thursday 2 June, children visiting the site will get to choose their side and support either the King or Parliament as they discover what life was like as a soldier in the English Civil War. With the help of a duo of historic re-enactors, children can learn some of the skills required to be a soldier in these troubled times, with drill for the soldiers and a chance to participate in a children’s battle each day!
“Although Kenilworth Castle changed hands between the Royalists and Parliamentarians several times during the English Civil War, this war marked the end of an era for Kenilworth, when the Parliamentarian army slighted it, knocking down its walls and draining its great man-made lake to ensure that it could not be used as a stronghold if it fell into Royalist hands,” explains Visitor Operations Manager for Kenilworth Castle, Holly Woodward.
The Time Traveller activities run each day from 11.00am to 5.00pm, with the castle itself opening an hour earlier at 10.00am. Admission prices are £8.00 for adults, £7.20 for concessions and £4.80 for children, with a family ticket (two adults and up to three children) available for just £20.80. English Heritage members get in free. An additional £1 will be charged on standard admission for every child (member and non member) for the Time Travellers activity.
