Enjoy the Summer Holidays Roman Style
13th June 2012

The Lunt Roman Fort is encouraging families to enjoy their summer holidays Roman style. Throughout the six week holiday there will be events taking place for visitors to explore and find out what it was like 2000 years ago.
Tuesday 24 July will see the beginning of the Lunt's Writing Competition. For children aged 5 to 11 the competition will encourage creativity and imagination. Younger children aged 5 and 6 will be asked to write a letter starting 'I liked visiting the Lunt Roman Fort because…' whilst children aged from 7 to 11 have to imagine that they're a soldier and then write a letter back home saying what life is like at the Lunt Roman Fort.
Entry forms for the Writing Competition will be available from the website or in person at the Lunt Roman Fort in Baginton.
Activity and make and take events will be happening each week between Tuesday and Friday of the summer holidays. From Roman chariots to coins through storytelling, food and exercise there is something taking place to entertain the whole family.
Most of the events taking place are FREE but a site fee applies. More information on the activities happening each day can be found at www.luntromanfort.org
An extra special event taking place on 14 and 15 August is Ancient Food and Fitness. There's a whole day of activities for families to take part in that will show what Roman life was really like. Starting at 10.30am there will be a porridge breakfast before Roman fitness training at 11.00am. From midday a healthy picnic lunch will be put on before the Spartan fitness session at 1.15pm. Rounding off the day will be a Roman style BBQ at 3.00pm.
Ancient Food and Fitness cost £5 per person and booking is essential on 024 7678 6142 or 07969 636670
The Lunt Roman Fort has changed its opening hours. They are now every school holiday between Tuesday and Friday between 11.00am and 4.00pm.
The Lunt Roman Fort is the only reconstructed wooden fort in Britain. It dates from the same period as the Boudican rebellion, and the archaeology on site indicates that it was built as a campaign headquarters and supply base.
The Lunt also boasts a reconstructed Gyrus, a circular enclosure used to train cavalry soldiers and their horses. Unique to Britain, the Lunt's Gyrus is the only example in the whole Roman Empire!
