Ruth Mackenzie, Director of the London 2012 Festival and Alan Davey, Chief Executive of Arts Council England were the guests of honour at the VIP opening of a unique, international art work in a former engine shed at Enginuity, one of the 10 Ironbridge Gorge Museums, in Shropshire’s Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site.

The VIP opening was a celebration of CORE, a magnificent generative digital art exhibition designed by renowned international artist Kurt Hentschläger. CORE has attracted 10,000 visitors from across the world since it opened to the public and officially became part of the London 2012 Festival on Tuesday 3rd July.

This free entry world-class exhibition has been created using a number of inter-linked projections which provide a glimpse into a weightless world. A series of ‘virtual aquariums’ contain dynamic humanoid figures in extreme motion whose movements are neither predictable nor repeated; sometimes they interact like schools of fish, while at other times they appear choreographed like ballet dancers or synchronised swimmers.

Anna Brennand, Deputy Chief Executive, Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust said; “We worked on CORE for over 12 months and it has been wonderful to see the vision become a reality. Working with artists such as Kurt is always inspirational and we have been delighted to hear the comments from the public, which have varied from ‘mesmerising’ and ‘thought provoking’ to ‘dark’.”

CORE forms part of the London 2012 Festival where leading artists from all over the world are coming together in the UK’s biggest ever nationwide festival. Over 1,000 events are taking place across the country with more than 10 million free opportunities for people to get involved through dance, music, theatre, the visual arts, film and digital innovation. CORE has been made possible thanks to the generous support of Arts Council England.
