Record Easter numbers for Dudley Zoological Gardens...

Visitor numbers throughout the 10-day holiday period topped 27,000 and additional events were laid on to cope with the crowds.

CEO Peter Suddock said: "We have had an incredible Easter period so far, and we still have a few days of school holidays left which will boost numbers further.

"There was much interest in our newly-restored Tecton structures – the entrance and Safari Shop – and we had lots of compliments about our new car park which makes it so much easier for families to access the site directly from their vehicles.

"But above all people came from across the UK to enjoy a cracking day out at one of the country's best loved zoos."

One of the highlight's of the weekend was the donation of a giant cake from newly-launched Oak Furniture Land, at Merry Hill.

The store commissioned Birmingham-based cake designer, Annabel de Vetten, of Cakebomb, to create a

confectionery masterpiece of Sumatran tigress, Daseep's head.

Mr Suddock added: "The cake was just amazing and we handed out more than 100 slices to visitors at our Teatime with the Tigers talk."

Elsewhere across site new arrivals included seven-week-old male Rothschild's giraffe, Kito, a week-old goldenbreasted capuchin monkey in the Small Primate House and a clutch of Easter chicks and ducklings, plus five giant English rabbits on the Farm.

Mr Suddock said: "We've had a truly cracking Easter and I'd like to say a big thank you from everyone at DZG for the fantastic support we have seen throughout the holidays."
